Priya and the Twirling Wind

In Association with Little Angel Theatre

Ram Devineni, creator of Priya - India’s first female superhero (and named “gender equality champion” by UN Women) teams with Raven Kaliana, an award-winning UK-based puppetry director to create Priya and the Twirling Wind. Priya, astride her flying tiger Sahas, visits Somya, an ill and frightened child in hospital. On a panoramic flight across the countryside, Priya shows Somya the environmental sources impacting her health. She introduces Somya to an idyllic land, which is protected from harm through the teamwork of her magical friends. This inspires Somya to take action when she returns home. The characters are all rod puppets handmade by Raven Kaliana, with lush illustrated backgrounds by artist Syd Fini. The film will be accompanied by an interactive comic book augmented with pop-up videos, which will feature Priya interviewing scientists and other experts on climate change and the process of switching to cleaner energy sources.

This film will be released at 12pm on Sunday 3rd April, and will be available for 18 months.

My third interactive science lesson for 4 - 11 year olds, originally live streamed on Facebook then edited for you tube. This week we do lots of experiments to understand animals’ amazing abilities! Plus story time and a special ‘Poo and Wee’ themed round up.

A teaspoon of margarine/butter/lard, two ice cubes, something to wipe butter off a hand! A piece of paper, a TV remote control, mobile phone camera, needle or pin, magnet (any size) two bowls of water (any size). What is Sensory Squad?
Sensory Squad is a fun and educational Makaton signed and captioned YouTube series for children which enhances communication and offers learning experiences through songs, stories and repetition.  The series aims to help families and children prepare for real world experiences such as farm, circus or museum visits.

Explore the world around us with the help of our friendly squad, including Rei. Inquisitive and helpful, Rei ‘zooms’ through life and wants to help everyone enjoy every moment.

Each episode includes an original song and a fun craft activity with instructions on how to join in with the use of the Sensory rucksack - a sack filled with fun, sensory items, which families and teachers can put together.

Children of all abilities will learn about different settings and feature activities that they can replicate using sensory moments e.g. getting grubby in the garden (grass) or exploring a local beach (bucket and sand)?

A choir of budding performers from The Music In Secondary Schools Choir were an integral part of the children’s choir who brought the nation together to sing "Any Dream Will Do" at the Platinum Party at the Palace on Saturday 4th June at Buckingham Palace. This was part of the Musicals section, which was curated by Andrew himself. MiSST also joined Andrew and the Joseph team to help us create a special edition of the original track "Any Dream Will Do" from Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

How fitting that, a show that started life as a school cantata written for children, has now brought talented and passionate young musicians onto a global stage to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee!

About MiSST:
The Music in Secondary Schools Trust (MiSST) works with disadvantaged secondary schools, and provides both classical instruments and regular music tuition for every child. Providing a 3-year programme of musical learning and education (at no cost to the students) built into the school’s curriculum, MiSST helps over 10,200 students a week to engage in group music lessons. A beautifully animated tale from Brazil that playfully imagines how the night came to be. It tells the story of three servants who disobeyed the King of the Ocean’s orders and released the deep-sea shadows into the daylight. This film invites children to think about curiosity, disobedience and to consider how we use narratives to imagine the earth’s phenomenon and origins.

This clip is from the BBC series Tales from Around the World. A series of six animated short films based on folktales from around the world - from a Brazilian story about where the night comes from, to a Punjabi king who allows himself to be eaten for breakfast each day and a Caliph who is turned into a stork by his greedy brother. The series includes stories from Brazil, India, Israel, Iraq, Pakistan and Nigeria. Narrated by Maureen Lipman, Meera Syal and others.

Aimed at literacy students at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, the films provide an engaging way to inform children about different countries, cultures and storytelling traditions. They constitute an invaluable and versatile resource for further learning across the curriculum and provide a great starting point for discussions in the classroom.

Teaching English Literature?

This video could be used to support the teaching of key literacy skills such as reading, writing and listening. It could encourage pupils to explore decisions of characters, and examine their actions to understand their cultural belief, values, differences and similarities in everyday life. It could also engage pupils in the way others see and imagine life and ask questions on what is familiar and unfamiliar. This could be used in connection with learning about stories from other cultures, as well as in conjunction with teaching about traditional stories and fables to explore the differences or similarities in storytelling. The tale could be incorporated into specific reading and writing exercises (e.g. pupils can write about a specific dramatic scene or a descriptive setting in the film). In addition, it could be used as part of creative writing exercises.

This clip will be relevant for teaching English Literature at KS2 in England and Wales.

Dave is building a new garden wall for Mrs Sharma. It’s taking a very, very long time. He is doing his best but keeps running out of bricks. This sounds like a job for Multiplication Boy. Can Multiplication Boy help Dave with some repeated addition on his numberline? Will Dave be able to calculate exactly how many bricks he needs to order to get the whole wall finished in one go? Will Mrs Sharma’s wall ever actually get finished?

Teaching Maths?

Children could explore multiplication problems linked to the story, using objects or pictures to support their understanding. For example: Dave drinks 5 cups of tea a day, and has 2 sugar cubes in each cup. How many sugar cubes will Mrs Sharma need to keep Dave going for the day? How many groups of 2 will you need? How might you write out the calculation?

Some children might use a numberline to jump on in steps of the number they are multiplying.

This clip will be relevant for teaching Maths at KS1 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and at First Level in Scotland.

Professor Danielle George demonstrates the world’s fastest Rubik’s cube solver and explains how it works using just a smartphone and bricks. The smartphone takes photographs of the cube using its built-in camera and the software works out the fastest way to solve the cube. The smartphone then sends instructions to the mechanical arms to tell them which parts of the cube to rotate. The Rubik’s cube solver is a prime example of how electronics in our everyday lives are capable of doing unexpected things.

Flapping their wings 80 times per second, these are the only birds in the world able to hover in one spot.

They use this to help them extract nectar from flowers with their long beaks.

To match this super-skill, Andy has been set a tough Beyond Bionic challenge - to find a way of defying gravity to mimic a hummingbird.
