Whilst training in puppetry at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama he became involved in the development of War Horse at the National Theatre, and went on to play the hind of Joey in the original production before moving to Joey’s head for the subsequent West End transfer. On leaving the show as a performer in 2011 he was made an associate puppetry director. In this video, Angel meets Matt Lloyd. Matt Lloyd is a Co-Artistic Director of Smoking Apples. Having trained at Rose Bruford in European Theatre Arts, he co-founded Smoking Apples with Molly Freeman and Hattie Thomas in 2010. He enjoys working with puppets and particularly the relationship between the puppet and audience, engaging the audience’s focus into wholeheartedly believing in essentially… an inanimate object, (regardless of whether the puppet is 4 inches or 4 metres tall). Alongside Smoking Apples, Matt works as a freelance Puppet Maker, set builder and Design Studio Manager for Kinetika. Visit smokingapplestheatre.com for more information.

In this video, Angel meets Ellie Mills. Ellie developed a love of puppetry after studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and has worked as a freelance designer and maker for a number of years. Ellie first joined Little Angel as the Participation Manager promoting the importance of drama and puppetry in the lives of children; helping to inspire their creativity and imagination as well as increase their confidence. Now as the In-House Designer she has worked on shows for both stage and screen including Mother Christmas, Bugaboo and Reach for the Stars. Last year Ellie co-created an interactive, touring show that coupled live theatre with AR technology to create a unique theatrical experience for children and young people isolated in hospitals, bringing the magic of puppetry to their bedside. This show was then re-mounted as a digital tour this year; this and all our online content has meant that we can keep reaching out to all those who cannot physically come through our doors.
